The Impulse Winding Tester (or Surge Tester) is an impulse winding tester that tests the electrical properties of a coil without damaging the DUT. It provides rapid detection of coil quality conditions. Detection is performed when the same electrical impulse is applied to a standard and DUT by a capacitor discharge. A voltage decay waveform is generated in response to the impulse, related to the Q-factor and inductance of the coil. This sense allows the tester to detect turn and layer shorts. Differences in the number of turns and core material can be detected if a high impulse voltage is applied. Poor insulation can result in corona or discharge. It is used for testing copper-clad coils, such as voltage transformers, motors, stators, and coils.
